The new San Francisco Botanical Garden Nursery & Maintenance Facility Project in Golden Gate Park has two primary goals: replacing aging structures and consolidating the Garden’s facilities. The project replaces old structures and infrastructure for growing plants, along with related equipment and supply storage, with new, in-kind structures for the same purposes. It consolidates the Garden’s growing grounds and greenhouse facilities into one area, separating them from public spaces. This new layout enhances visitor experiences and improves operational efficiency by clearly distinguishing public areas from nursery and maintenance spaces.
The all-electric nursery and maintenance facility advances the Botanical Garden’s mission to connect people with plants and conservation. The project includes two pre-engineered buildings: a metal-framed Headhouse and an aluminum-framed greenhouse, one of California’s first all-electric greenhouses. The structures are positioned parallel across an outdoor work yard and site improvements include bioretention basins and permeable crushed stone paths to manage rainwater. The donor-funded project met goals to maximize accessibility and minimize costs, with the greenhouse visible to visitors and the Headhouse nestled against a hillside.
