The Angelo Reserve Science Center, a new field research facility for the University of California’s Natural Reserve System, is sited at the edge of a clearing overlooking the Eel River. A continuous portico that provides shade in summer and protection from rain in winter links four separate structures. The portico columns and framing were made from Douglas Fir logs culled from the Reserve. Building orientation and shading minimize summer heat gain, and the buildings are shaped to take maximum advantage of natural ventilation. The use of efficient framing techniques reduced framing lumber by 20%; purchased lumber came from FSC certified sustainable sources. Other exterior materials were chosen for durability and low maintenance.
